I couldn't help it, I had to build another bird. When I started looking around for ideas in Mexico, I soon discovered that the bird that they called "cuervo" (Spanish for crow) was actually a great tailed grackle. This turned out to be perfect for me, as it gave me a bird that was almost as long as a crow (because of the long tail), but quite a bit slimmer and lighter. And since it had been several years since I built the original crow, parts had gotten smaller. The big advantage of that was that a lighter bird doubled the range of what I had with the old crow. But mainly it was just the joy of creating something that was even better that got me so excited.

To my surprise, finding parts in Mexico was actually pretty easy. I would call up a distributor in Mexico City, give him a credit card number (from my Panamanian bank) and a PO Box in Cancun. Several weeks later whatever I wanted usually showed up. And some of the U.S. restrictions on electronic parts like accurate GPS chips, were actually not a concern here.

So after a bunch of trial and error, months of coding on my laptop, and several bird configurations (one of which sadly ended up at the bottom of the ocean), I finally had a bird again that could fly and spy on people. Somehow I wanted to put it to use making some money, maybe enough to go home again, or at least get some financial security. Of course, things never turned out the way I planned.

Surveillance Functions:

  • Carbide talons allow feet to grip most vertical walls
  • Drill pin point video lenses through walls (1,000 PSI)
  • Relay encoded video signals (from lenses) for a distance of up to 5 kilometers
  • Simulation of Grackle body movements to reduce risk of detection
  • Directed image capture of targets within range of attributes (zoom lense through beak)
